Why and Who Needs A DIC
A Driver Improvement Course (DIC) in Ontario is required for drivers whose licence has been suspended or cancelled due to traffic violations, demerit points, or other serious offences. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) may direct you to complete this course before your licence can be reinstated or reissued.
You may be required to take a DIC if:
Your licence was suspended by the court for offences such as careless driving, stunt driving, or dangerous driving.
You have accumulated too many demerit points on your record.
You received an official MTO letter requiring you to complete a DIC before reinstatement.
Your licence has been cancelled, and you must complete a DIC (along with reinstatement fees) before being eligible for a new licence.
Why Is the DIC Important?
The DIC helps drivers:
Regain their driving privileges after a suspension or cancellation.
Learn safer driving habits and reduce high-risk behaviours.
Fulfill MTO requirements for licence reinstatement or reissuance.
Prevent future suspensions or cancellations by reinforcing responsible driving.
⚠️ Important: Even if you pay your reinstatement fees, your licence will not become valid until you successfully complete the DIC if it has been required by the MTO.
